It sounds like you've got a great way to describe three major goals of branding: getting into the consumer's evoked set (the brands that are considered acceptable when making a purchase decision), increasing the perceived value of your offering, and creating price inelasticity. And, as you point out, product and service attributes are incredibly important to this process; promotion alone won't do it.</description>
